09 March 2009 Ted Harvey

It was standing room only at Hadham Church for the funeral of Ted Harvey, who died recently at the age of 74.

Ted was an extremely able jockey, and in the 50s and 60s, a time when East Anglia had more than its fair share of outstanding riders, he rode over 60 winners in Point-to-Points and Hunter Chases, mostly for his parents. His own greatest success as an owner came when Little Polveir, who he had purchased for his son David to ride in the Grand Military Chase, won the 1989 Grand National.

After hanging up his boots he continued to support East Anglian Point-to-Pointing, officiating as a steward for many years, and he was always on hand to watch his youngest son Alex's own successes between the flags. The well-known "saxe blue and scarlet sleeves" are currently being carried by Nykel, trained by his godson Nigel Bloom, and in whom Ted had a share.
