03 October 2011 New base for a New Season

by Carolyn Tanner

Carey Williamson and Mikey Ennis, who were based at Sarah Humphrey's yard near Newmarket last season, have both moved on to pastures new.

On the evidence of her impressive partnership over hurdles with Silver Lily, Carey, who reverted to amateur after riding as a Conditional for a few years, deserves more opportunities in the saddle. She is hoping to pick up more rides between the flags in the forthcoming campaign, and with that in mind she has opted for the freedom to school for different yards.

She is currently enjoying riding out for John Ferguson, who has young horses to race under Rules as well as training Pointers, and in the last few days has sent out his first three winners with a permit.

Mikey, whose ability did not go unnoticed by some experienced observers in East Anglia last season, has recently joined David Pipe's powerful yard in Somerset. He is hoping to get some Point-to-Point rides in his adopted area, and also, if work allows, to maintain his partnerships with trainers for whom he has ridden previously, including in East Anglia and the Northern area.

He can lay claim to be the most-travelled amateur in the country (his fervent wish is for a sponsored car!), and he has now spread his wings further afield after being picked as one of the British riders in the Tri-Nations series with Ireland and France. Mikey has so far travelled to Limerick and to Pompadour, where he rode for Guillaume Macaire, and he is looking forward to the third leg at Folkestone in November.
