Cannington Brook, unbeaten in two Point-to-Point starts last season and subsequently named as one of the Weatherbys Chase Stars in the 2010 Mackenzie & Harris Annual, runs under Rules today at Folkestone.

Whilst the Weatherbys Chase Stars list was originally intended to mark out horses with potential to excel in the Point-to-Point and Hunter Chase arena in the coming season, it came as no surprise when Cannington Brook was sent under Rules after the Annual went to print, so impressive were the times of his Maiden and Restricted wins at Barbury and Charlton Horethorne respectively.

Now trained by Colin Tizzard after being trained by Patrick Bryant last season, the Winged Love gelding made an encouraging start under Rules in a Chepstow Beginners' Steeplechase, in which he was beaten only three-and-a-half lengths into second by Jaunty Journey, before finding the competition too hot in a Grade 2 Novices' Chase at Newbury in which he was pulled up after not being able to keep with the impressive winner, Michel Le Bon, who is now being talked of in Cheltenham Festival terms.

An apparent confidence booster is on the cards at Folkestone, with Cannington Brook declared for the Saga Holidays Maiden Hurdle over 2m6f110y. With his 3m Restricted win at Charlton coming on soft ground, there has to be hope that the predicted heavy going at Folkestone will not cause huge concern for connections.
