29 February 2012 Preview: Derwent - Charm Park
by Charlotte Brader
The Derwent Hunt Point-to-Point takes place at Charm Park on Sunday 4th March. 109 horses have been entered for the seven race card, with the Maiden being divided in advance.
The first race is due off at 12.30 pm and is the PPORA Club Members race for Veteran and Novice riders. 19 horses have been entered for what looks like a very competitive race. Sally Cranny won her Maiden at this venue last season and would be making her seasonal debut. Gwyre will be aiming to give William Easterby his first ever winner and representing the veterans, Chris Cundall will have the pick of Andre Chenier or The Gloves Are Off. The in-form Lem Putt is an interesting entry and his trainer, Nicola Naughton explained "I entered him in this race because his stable mate Scrum V is entered in the Mens and has no other options. Lem Putt will carry 12 stone if he runs and the only other option was the Confined where he would carry a penalty." The likely winner is Oedipe who is hoping to be on route to Cheltenham.
Forge Valley, who made a winning debut to the season at North Carlton, runs in the Confined and could be in the frame. Bright Cloud, who won at Sheriff Hutton, steps up in class but is plenty capable of winning a Confined, however Sheepclose, who has been running under Rules, could make a winning debut in the Pointing sphere.
The Mens Open race is a quality affair with Sonevafushi, Borero and Scrum V all in the line up and if he goes to post Scrum V could take all the beating.
Ganbei is entered in the Open Maiden Div I and was about to take up the running two furlongs from home in the Sinnington Maiden before running out on the bend. If he can overcome his quirks he is more than capable of taking this.
Charm Park is a left handed flat galloping course, which is very fair and a great place to introduce maidens. It is located off the A170 and the postcode for satellite navigation is YO13 9QU. Admission is £10 per person in the reserved car park and £8 per person in the non-reserved car park.
