13 January 2009 Preview: Dunston Harriers at Ampton
A positive weather forecast means that prospects are excellent for this Sunday's Dunston Harriers meeting at Ampton, near Bury St Edmunds.
A total of 106 entries have been received for this seven-race fixture. It gets under way at noon with the first running of a Club Members Conditions Race, which has attracted the biggest entry of the card with 19 engaged, and runs through until 3.30pm, where there are ten possibles for a PPORA Novice Riders event.
Midlands trainer Sue Taylor could hold the key to the Ladies Open as she has both Bravery Scotch (a winner at this fixture 12 months ago) and Mad Victor among a 16-strong entry.
The Men's Open has 13 engaged including another course winner, Caveman, who should be all the better for his Cottenham reappearance three weeks ago, where he finished an encouraging third.
Ampton is four miles north of Bury St Edmunds using the A134 (signposted for Thetford). The course is very close to this trunk road, and is best approached by turning east (right if you are coming from Bury) at the pub in the village of Ingham.
Admission will be charged at £10 per head for adults, to include a free racecard. Under 16s will be admitted free provided they are accompanied by a paying adult.
The course was perfectly raceable on Monday having been frost-bound for the previous week.
The going is currently ‘good, good to firm in the back straight'.
