17 January 2012 Preview: Heythrop - Dunthrop

by Claire Hart

South Midlands Area Point-to-Point racing returns this Sunday at Dunthrop, which is situated two miles north east of Chipping Norton near the junction of the A3400 and A361.

Point-to-Point racing has taken place here at Dunthrop since 1983 and sadly this will be the last meeting here before relocating to a new course at Aldsworth. The Heythrop hunt has enjoyed wonderful racing here and some wonderful memories of Dunthrop will be held by many.

The opening Maiden race has received a huge entry of 65 and has yet to be split, therefore meaning that races will now be run at 30 minute intervals to ensure beating the fading light.

The AGA Ladies Open has received a good entry and promises to be a competitive event. This is a feature Ladies and will be run over 3m5f. Last year's winner Upton Springs is sure to go well; she was last seen at Barbury Castle in early December when finishing a gallant 2nd to the classy Kicks For Free. She will be partnered as usual by her trainer Sarah-Jayne Davies. Gidam Gidam, Cluthe Boy, The Hookie Bookie and Master Alf all have form which suggests the extended trip will suit and if the ground were to be on the soft side Palypso de Creek is also worth noting. This race promises to be very competitive as maximum points will also be awarded to the winning jockey in the AGA ladies championship.

Naunton Brook, who was rejuvenated by running in Points last season, will be bidding to win the Lord Ashton of Hyde's Mens Open for the second year running. Run over 4m this is a huge test of stamina and there are several entered that this will suit. Marblehead, Worship The Stars and You Do The Math are all classy performers and if they all ran here it will be a very exciting race. Others to note are Current Exchange and Wickford, the latter will be partnered by Sam Painting who is currently leading Gentleman rider in the area.

The PPORA Novice Riders Race has attracted 25 entries. Mount Benger, already a winner this season, looks a likely favourite though Spare Change who has been twice 2nd deserves to go one better. Shannon Springs, who was 2nd in this race last year under owner/rider Jennifer Mason, is also worth noting.

With seven races on the card already and in the likely event of the first race being split Sunday promises to bring some high class racing.

Hot and cold food and drinks will be available throughout the day. There will also be tradestands for those wishing to have a shop!

Entrance is £20 per car or £10 single occupancy.
