21 January 2011 Kelda Wood's Latest Charity Venture

by Carolyn Tanner

Shropshire-based trainer-rider Kelda Wood, whose fund-raising efforts last year considerably boosted the coffers of Help For Heroes, has her sights set on helping a new charity, the formation of which has come about from her own idea.

"Climbing Out!", whose patron is Sir Chris Bonington CBE, is aimed at having a positive influence on the lives of disadvantaged young people through the use of outdoor activities. In conjunction with Carnegie Great Outdoors, the outdoor department of Leeds Metropolitan University, "Climbing Out!" aims to give opportunities for those who may be suffering from injury, illness, neglect or abuse to participate in experiences such as climbing, scrambling and kayaking.

CGO operates with the use of an AALA licence (Adventure Activities Licensing Authority) that ensures courses are not only offered to young people safely, but are also delivered in line with recognised industry best practice.

To raise funds for the venture, Kelda, who combines her charity work with training Pointers from her yard near Pontesbury, is organising a charity ball on March 12. Everest mountaineer Dave Bunting MBE will be guest speaker at the black tie evening, which includes a three-course dinner, an auction of promises, and dancing to live music until 1am. Tickets cost £40 and can be booked by contacting Kelda on 01743 790549 or kelda@kw-racing.com.
