01 March 2012 Preview: Thurlow - Horseheath
by James Crispe
Wild Is The Wind, who won all four of his starts in the Midlands last year and was previously a dual Hunter Chase scorer, could make his debut for his new connections, the East Norfolk-based Vaughan-Jones family, at the Thurlow Point-to-Point at Horseheath on Saturday (March 3).
A total of 92 entries have been received for this, the first meeting of the year at the excellent Haverhill venue following the frost-induced postponement of its February 5 fixture.
The action commences at 1.00pm when there are 13 possible runners in a Hunts Club Members Race and runs through until 3.45pm, when the sixth and final contest, the Open Maiden, has 17 engaged.
Wild Is The Wind is one of 17 entries in the Mens Open. Merry Vic, who returned from a 22-month absence to push the top class Barbers Shop all the way in a Fontwell Hunter Chase on February 26 and has won nine of his 13 career Pointing starts, stands out among his potential opponents.
The prolonged dry spell means that watering may be necessary in order to provide a safe racing surface. Fortunately, the course owners have recently drilled a borehole in expectation of precisely this kind of rain-free winter.
Horseheath is four miles west of Haverhill (post code CB21 4QF) with easy access straight off the A1307. Admission will be charged at £10 per head with under 17s free.
