Northern area champion Tristan Davidson's charity haircut (see News, 3 May) has raised over £2,400, which has been split between the Injured Jockeys' Fund and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

As the owner of a flock of sheep, Tristan should know a good shearing job when he sees one, and he admitted that his barber for the occasion, John Leadbetter, who paid £50 for the privilege, had performed his duty more than adequately. John, who trained Rubstic to win the 1979 Grand National, did the honours at the Border meeting at Hexham at the end of May. "He'd only ever clipped horses before but he did a good job," admitted his victim.
