Successful North West area rider Adam Wadlow has decided to hang up his boots.
Adam opened his account on Radical Views at Wolverhampton in 1998, since when he has added another 43 Point-to-Point victories. His most productive year was 2006, when he booted home ten winners.
He also has three Hunter Chase triumphs under his belt, the highlight being when Martha's Kinsman won the four-miler at Cheltenham's evening meeting in 2010. Two years earlier he had taken the prestigious Walrus Hunter Chase at Haydock on Christy Beamish.
The time factor is the main reason for Adam's retirement. A Chartered Surveyor by profession, he now has his own successful company specialising in dealings with the fuel industry - "We buy and sell petrol stations," is his succinct way of describing it.
"I sometimes don't ride from one weekend to the next [during the season]," he explained, "and you need to be riding a lot because it's not fair to the trainers if you aren't 100% fit, as the standard is so strong nowadays. I've had great fun, and I've ridden for some really nice people," he added, expressing his gratitude to, among others, Belinda Clarke, Richard Hewitt - "not forgetting Ricky B" he stressed - Ian Anderson, Caroline Robinson and Royston Smart.
Thankfully he will not be turning his back on the sport, as he owns a share in Alcarson with Belinda, and he will be on hand to support his younger brother Ollie, who will be taking over on some of the Clarke horses. And he modestly summed up his achievements by pointing out "I'll be an excellent grandstand jockey and I'll be considerably better at telling Ollie what to do than I was at riding them myself!"
